Despite its antique Tudor appearance, this structure was actually an ingenious solution for an electricity substation entrance, founded by the Charing Cross Electricity Company. The Hut’s role became crucial during World War II, when it served as a temporary shelter from air raids during times of the Blitz. The shelter, according to Leslie Hardcastle, president of the Soho Society, could originally hold 150-200 people.
